The social media giant is set to expand its workforce here in Ireland with the construction of a new data centre in Meath.

The company has lodged plans to build the facility, which will be powered by renewable energy, and would create 40 new full time jobs here in Ireland. Facebook already employs over 900 people at their headquarters in Dublin, while this new building is set to be based near Clonee.

Speaking about the plans, Rachel Peterson the data centre director of Facebook said that "Ireland has been a home for Facebook since 2007 and today's planning application demonstrates our continued interest to invest in Ireland", while a spokesperson for the company said that this move could lead to "an economic impact in the order of hundreds of millions of euros, with thousands of jobs supported".

Chief executive of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan, said that "the news that the company wants to build its second European data centre in a regional location such as Meath will cement the relationship" between Ireland and Facebook even further.
