Emma Watson marks the latest to call out the damaging effect of the media, social media, and rumours.

Last weekend saw Henry Cavill clap back at the "social animosity" he has experienced since announcing his relationship with girlfriend Natalie Viscuso.

Taking to Instagram, he wrote: "Dear fans and followers, I wanted to make a wee community announcement. I couldn't help but notice that there has been some social animosity of late. It's becoming increasingly prevalent on my feed."

He continued: "To you out there who are expressing your disdain and showing your displeasure through a surprising variety of ways, it's time to stop. I know it can be fun to speculate, to gossip, and to dive into our own personal echo chambers on the internet, but your 'passion' is misplaced, and it causes harm to the people I care about most."

He told fans he is "very happy and in love." He urged his followers: "If you can't bring yourself to be happy with me, then at the very least try to do yourself proud and be the best version of yourself."

Emma Watson too has been the victim of speculation and gossip of late.

The 'Harry Potter' star was spotted wearing a ring on her wedding finger back in February. This sparked rumours that her boyfriend of two years, Leo Robinton, had popped the question.

Watson wrote on Twitter: "Dear Fans, Rumours about whether I'm engaged or not, or whether my career is 'dormant or not' are ways to create clicks each time they are revealed to be true or untrue."

She wrote in another tweet: "If I have news – I promise I'll share it with you."

In another couple of tweets, Emma Watson wrote: "In the mean time please assume no news from me just means I’m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are – failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still affecting so many people.

"I am sending so much love to you, hoping you’re ok and as well and happy as you can be in these strange times. And again, thank you to everyone working so hard to keep us safe and well. E Xx"
