A plane performed an emergency landing at Cork airport last night after a suspected fuel leak.

Holiday makers headed from Belfast to Barcelona got a surprise last night after the pilot made contact with Cork airport to request permission to perform an emergency landing.

The plane had a suspected fuel leak, and the response from those on the ground and in the air was swift and decisive, as when the plane touched down in Cork the Gardai and fire services were already on hand to deal with the situation.

Those on board were headed for a bit of sun in Barcelona, but their unexpected diversion to Cork meant that they were put up in hotels around the city, according to The Evening Echo. The plane has since been inspected and as there were no traces of fuel found on the runway, it is believed that it may have been a faulty gauge in the cockpit which caused the problem.

For the passengers, there has been no confirmation yet of when they will be able to fly out, as the plane they were aboard needs to have a full check performed on it, while another plane has not yet been assigned for the trip.
