He is well-known for his wind-ups, so when Elon Musk announced that he would be rebranding Twitter over the weekend, it caused quite a stir.

It seems, however, that the current Twitter boss's claims are true this time - and he will be rebranding the social media platform as 'X'.

"Soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds," he tweeted late on Saturday night. He also changed his profile picture to an 'X' logo and linked 'x.com' in his bio.

Musk also ran a poll that asked users whether he should "Change default platform color to black", so it looks like he may be serious about the rebranding.

Twitter was founded in 2006, but Musk acquired the company in a $44 billion deal in October 2022. He has made a number of controversial changes in the months since, including removing all blue ticks from accounts and the introduction of 'Twitter Blue' accounts, where those who want to have their accounts verified must pay.

He is also responsible for laying off 80% of the company's global staff.

X is clearly a letter that Musk is fond of, considering his son with Grimes is called X Æ A-XII.

Considering that posts on Twitter have been known as 'tweets', however, it's not clear what the correct terminology should now be: Xs?
