Dublin City centre is either about to get a whole lot easier to get across or a whole lot harder depending on your chosen method of transportation.

According to the Irish Times, Dublin City Council wants to close the north lanes of traffic on College Green, Dublin 2 in a new trial scheme to pedestrianise the area before the Luas starts coming through in 2017.

DCC's plans propose a 'pedestrian friendly civic space' outside the Bank of Ireland on College Green, temporarily closing lanes in front of the building and stopping all traffic, including buses and taxis. All traffic looking to head down Dame St. and onto Westmoreland St. would then share the southbound lanes on College Green, which would be changed to a two-way system of single lanes of traffic.

Sound like chaos? Well DCC have that in mind, and have said 'Anything we do will be reversible', so if/when it all goes to pot, they're allowing for a hasty return to the current setup.

No dates are set for the testing yet, but the Irish Times predicts that it will likely be trialed on a few Sundays next year.
