Letterman, and his fairly impressive beard, sat down for a lengthy interview with New York Magazine and the former late night TV host did not disappoint.

Since David Letterman hung up with hosting duties, he's pretty much disappeared from the public eye and while the likes of Jon Stewart is popping back to have a swing at Trump every now and then, Letterman's been conspicuously quiet on the subject. Until now.

Speaking to David Marchese, the 69-year-old dusted off his gloves and addressed the last six months in American politics frankly, taking aim at Trump and his hair amongst other things, saying "I mean, we elected a guy with that hair?" Why don’t we investigate that? He looks like Al Jardine of the Beach Boys. I don’t know."

He also has some pretty honest words about the rest of Trump's team, calling Steve Bannon "the Hunchback of Notre Dame", Sean Spicer a "boob who just got out of a cab and now here he is" and says that "Alec Baldwin deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom" for his work on SNL.

But it wasn't all jokes, with Letterman addressing the risk of normalising Trump by making him a punchline, saying:

"Donald Trump can be Donald Trump, but if he doesn’t help the people that need help, then he’s just a jerk. That press conference that he held berating the news media? I mean, how do you build a dictatorship? First, you undermine the press: 'The only truth you’re going to hear is from me.'"

It really is a stellar piece of reading that you should make some time for, if only to remind you how great a comedian David Letterman is.
