If you're running late for your next flight, you probably shouldn't try this...

An Italian couple who got stuck in traffic on their way to the airport in Malta opted for a rather strange tactic when they realised that the delay could mean that they would miss their flight. Matteo Clementi, 26, and girlfriend Enrica Apollonio, 23, decided to run on to the tarmac to try and flag down their Ryanair flight and hop on board.

According to what a court in Malta heard about the case, the couple were able to check in, but by the time they'd made it to the gate, the boarding had finished and the plane was ready to start taxiing. It's engines were on and the stairs had been removed, but the plane had not yet started moving, so they forced a door open and ran down on to the tarmac, trying to get the attention of the pilots, who they hoped would let them on board.

For their troubles, the couple spent the night in a jail cell (not to mention it was Enrica's 23rd birthday that day too) and have been hit with a fine of €2,329, which they will pay in installments. Would have been cheaper to just get another flight...
