Having helped to create the latest craze to sweep the internet, Corey Griffin was part of a project that raised millions of dollars for ALS.

Corey Griffin was a philanthropist and the man behind the ice bucket challenge that has seen celebrities and people from all walks of life get covered in ice cold water, all for the benefit of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, raising $22.9 million in the process.

Griffin's life was cut short yesterday evening however when he drowned in a tragic accident in Nantucket, Massachusetts at the age of just 27.

Pete Frates, a close friend of Griffin's who had been diagnosed with the condition, said that his friend was always there to help and that he was constantly looking for ways to raise awareness and funds for the disease: "He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS. We texted everyday, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events".

Griffin was at another fundraiser just a few short hours before his death, where he had raised in excess of $100,000 for ALS.
