R-eely sad news coming over the wires today, as Åle the eel, the oldest European eel in the world, has passed away.

According to TheLocal.se, he lived to the ripe old age of 155 and passed away recently in his home, which is a well in the little fishing town of Brantevik in Skåne.

Tomas Kjellman, who owns the house where Åle lived, said that his family bought the place in 1962, and for him Åle had just always been the family pet. When they went to pay him a visit and show him off to a few guests recently, they made the discovery that he had passed away.

Kjellman added that Åle was a bit of a miracle, as these eels normally only live to be about seven years old, but that he had spent his whole life in the well and that may have had a role to play in his incredibly long life. As a result, scientists are hoping to examine his body to discover what kept him alive so long.

Åle left behind one survivor, a partner eel, who is a mere 110-years-old, but Tomas stated that they don't have a name for that one yet. May we suggest 'Junior'?
