Odds are you were sent a grainy image of this town sign at some point in the early '00s, either as part of a very long e-mail chain, or your Dad showed it to you on his broken ten-year old phone and with a hearty chuckle.

The village of Fucking, located in the municipality of Tarsdorf in the upper-western region of Austria, has become world famous because of its name and nothing else. The name of Fucking bears a resemblance to an English swear word, which we're allowed to use here because we're using it to talk about an Austrian village name, and not the act or the adjective itself that it bears a resemblance to.

Even though we, y'know, use this word in copious amounts in our daily lives. No, we won't use it in that context here. We're professionals.

Anyway, the village of Fucking has had a problem for many years, and it's a problem for people for everywhere - English tourists.

The road sign leading into the town of Fucking has become a prized artifact, as it's regularly stolen by tourists. Indeed, it became so common that in 2005, the village of Fucking used anti-theft measures on the road signs, and in 2009, the village installed CCTV cameras to further deter theft of their road signs.

Well, evidently, the people of Fucking have had enough and have now officially voted to change the name of Fucking to... (drum-roll) Fugging. Per a report by AFP and verified by numerous outlets, the mayor of Tarsdorf municipality - in which Fucking rests - confirmed that the village is changing its name after many, many years of the joke long since making its point.

"I really don’t want to say anything more – we’ve had enough media frenzy about this in the past," said Mayor Andrea Holzer, referring to a rumour that circulated online in 2012 that the village was getting a name change.

It's a sad, sad day for a town that traces its name back a Bavarian nobleman named Focko, but who knows? Maybe it's for the best. It could simply just be that they're tired of the jokes. But then again, there's a hotel in Paris called the Hotel Kuntz and that's still in business? Is it such a bad thing?
