Pharrell produces and writes all of the catchiest songs going, and that even includes the ones that he definitely didn't write, because he just thought about writing them, hummed them and released them in to the air to appear in someone else's mind under the guise of their own thoughts.
Anyway, it seems that he has a bit of a formula for how he starts off his songs, which is to loop the first beat of the first bar a few times. It catches your attention, it kicks the song into a rhythm, and now that you know about it, it lets you know that it's Pharrell. Have a listen to this supercut as proof:
