Changes to the Leaving Cert points system will now see students get awarded points even if they get below 40%.

Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan is looking to bring about a change to the way that the points system for the Leaving Cert works, and will propose an alteration to the current marking scheme to the cabinet tomorrow.

The new ranking system will see students who score between 30-39% also awarded CAO points on a paper, instead of the current scheme which sees anything below 40% as a fail. This new system is already being seen as a way to make it harder for students to fail exams at higher level.

If the proposal is successful, those students who enter fifth year next September will be the first group who will be subject to the new marking system.
