'You' season four filming is well underway in London, where the story will continue to unfold with new (and likely murderous) twists. As creepy as the stalking/killing lifestyle is, directors think some of the other scenes are a little creepier.
Badgley recently revealed on his podcast 'Podcrushed', that he's been given some very interesting feedback from directors on set regarding very particular scenes — the masturbation scenes, of which there have been... quite a few.
"Every time I've done a masturbation scene — which is so far every season at least once," he explains, "I've always gotten the note to make it less creepy". That's a rather unexpected note for a man playing a cold-blooded killer, right?
Badgley agrees, "They say like, 'Close your eyes or go faster or go slower.' I'm like, 'What? This man is f**king murdering people, and he's masturbating in the street. You're saying I'm making it creepy? How is it I'm the one making it creepy".
Of the first of the "iconic" Joe Goldberg masturbation scenes, Badgley explains being approached by the director Lee Toland Krieger about those scenes, which he deems "harder than intimate scenes with a person", who advised him "Buddy, I just, I think you gotta close your eyes".
Reacting to the note on his being "creepy", he remembers thinking "well that's the, that's the f**king point". But ultimately, he understands that the show is uniquely going where few, if any, shows have gone before, "That's just this strange line that we're always walking on our show and I suppose many of us are examining, what, toxicity in sexual culture, while trying to be sexy".
