Amanda Sefried is taking on the highly controversial figure Elizabeth Holmes in new drama 'The Dropout'.

'The Dropout' will debut on Disney+ in Ireland and the UK next month while in the US, it debuts on Hulu.

Elizabeth Holmes is an American former biotechnology entrepreneur and the CEO of the now defunct Theranos.

Holmes falsely claimed that her company's technology could run hundreds of medical tests using only a few drops of blood.

She faces up to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of one count of conspiracy to defraud investors, and three counts of wire fraud against investors - her sentencing is set for later this year.

The official synopsis for the Disney+ series reads: "Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception.

"From Executive Producer Elizabeth Meriwether, 'The Dropout' is the story of Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) and Theranos, an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong.

"How did the world’s youngest self-made billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye?"

Meriwether was previously behind the Zooey Deschanel series 'New Girl'.

Aside from Seyfried, Stephen Fry, William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf, Sam Waterston, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Michel Gill, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Elizabeth Marvel, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Naveen Andrews and Michaela Watkins also star in 'The Dropout'.

The series begins streaming on Disney+ on March 3.
