It's been six days since the fourth season of the Netflix sci-fi hit, and fans have already watched all 500+ minutes of volume one.
And with that, fans have noticed something a little bit off - they've discovered a 'Stranger Things' plot hole concerning Eleven's journey back to her traumatizing memories. *SPOILERS BELOW*
Millie Bobby Brown has played the main role of Eleven since the series debuted in 2016, with season four arguably her best performance as the troubled young teen. Since the end of season three of the fantasy/sci-fi/thriller, however, the superpowered character has been devoid of any such superhuman traits. Season four sees her be recruited by Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) in order to revisit her blocked-out memories in the hopes that this will trigger her powers back to being fully functional, activating her Vecna-killing mode.
Dipping Eleven into the sensory deprivation tank in the present in Nevada, Owens and "Papa"/Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) playback the most traumatising moments of her time spent in that murky Hawkins facility, placing her into her younger body. Fans, however, have noticed a slight hiccup with this storyline, and they've been voicing their opinions online.
You see, if you cast your mind all the way back to the summer of 2016 when 'Stranger Things' debuted, and we lived for the synthy blast of that theme song for the first time, when Eleven appeared on screen for the majority of the season, the waffle-loving kid barely spoke a word. But, in these season four "flashbacks", she's talking to orderly Peter (Jamie Campbell Bower) without any difficulty.
Perhaps Eleven became so affected by this moment (and yes, it really did have a huge impact on her), that she became a mute? It could also be that as the character is revisiting her past in her teenage body, that she's manipulating the scenario to fit her more matured mind.
Will we get answers about this from The Duffer Brothers in the remaining season four episodes? Or will this go down as possibly the only 'Stranger Things' plot hole? We'll have to wait and see if we'll get our answer when volume two arrives on Netflix on July 1.
