Thankfully, Sony is not entering the streaming market, and is partnering up with Netflix for their content.
2022 is going to be a big year for Netflix. Beginning next year, all new Sony movies will move directly to Netflix following their theatrical run.
This new multiyear deal between the two companies means that titles such as Tom Holland's 'Uncharted' movie, the third 'Jumanji' reboot, 'Where the Crawdads Sing', as well as all of the Sony/Marvel expanded universe titles will be heading to Netflix.
The second entry in the 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage', and Jared Leto's 'Morbius' are all expected to be included in the deal too.
The remaining 2021 slate of movies from Sony, which includes the upcoming 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife', and animation musical 'Vivo' are all set to release on Netflix next year. This will also include Sony's back catalogue of films.
Netflix will have exclusive rights to these upcoming Sony films for an 18-month window.
According to Deadline, sources claim that Netflix made Sony an offer of $1 billion over the next four years.
This is great news for Netflix subscribers. Not only will we eventually be able to see the movies in cinemas, we'll also be able to rewatch them again with a paid subscription. It also means that if you want to skip the theatrical release, that option is there too. But we're all pining for a cinema date by now, right?
The news is also good for movie fans who don't want to pay for yet another subscription service. With Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Sky and NOW, Paramount+, Hulu, HBO Max (some of which aren't available in Ireland, but worth a mention), it can be overwhelming in choosing which service to use.
