This Mother’s Day, you probably made plans to visit your mammy. But with things being the way they are, one option could be to #covideo to keep you and your loved ones safe.
In case you're unfamiliar with the concept, it sees you play the movie at the same time as someone else and share reactions to it via Skype or Twitter or whatever. So it could be the perfect solution for you to spend time with your mum on Mother's Day.
Since we're all in it for the long haul anyway, we thought we’d give you some recommendations for movies currently on Netflix the two of you (and especially she) can enjoy.
Lady Bird
If you found Ronan's character in 'Lady Bird' irritiating, it's only because she pulls off being a teenager on the cusp of adulthood so damn well. The actress plays a student going through her last year of school before heading to college. Growing pains include fights with her mum (the brilliant Laurie Metcalf). Plus there's the whole dawning realisation that the world doesn't revolve around her. For daughters, it's like watching your own life flash before your eyes. And you'll appreciate your mum much more.
Darkest Hour
'Darkest Hour' follows British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as he debates whether to wage war or negotiate with Adolf Hitler. Garry Oldman is impressively physically transformed for the role and he earned the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance. While not always historically accurate, it makes for a compelling drama that mums will be enthralled by, and there are great supports in Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas among others.
Sense and Sensibility
Another star-filled cast populates 'Sense and Sensibility' between Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant. Thompson also penned the Academy Award-winning screenplay which is expertly adapted from Jane Austen's renowned novel. It follows a family who are left poor by the rules of inheritance, on the basis of them all being female. Thompson and Winslet are fantastic as two sisters looking for love while Gemmas Jones is also impressive as their mother.
Howards End
'Howards End' boasts a stellar cast between (again) Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Anthony Hopkins and Vanessa Redgrave. It follows what happens when a businessman doesn't carry out his late wife's bequest of an estate to another woman. It's a top-notch costume drama with a compelling story as well as fantastic performances.
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The quintessential Richard Curtis movie, 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' followed Charles (Hugh Grant) searching for love and SPOILER #1 eventually finding it with Carrie (Andie MacDowell). In the process he SPOILER #2 attends four weddings and a funeral with his friends. One for you and mum to have a laugh and cry at in these trying times.
The King's Speech
We can all appreciate how dastardly handsome and talented Colin Firth is. It transcends gender and generation, so both you and mum should enjoy his career best. Firth won the Oscar for playing King George VI, who suffers with a stammer and requires a speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) to cope. Helena Bonham Carter, a regular in historical and costume dramas, makes a brilliant Queen Elizabeth.
The Young Victoria
Aside from 'The Devil Wears Prada', 'The Young Victoria' is another early performance from Emily Blunt that showed her talent as an actress. The movie takes the romance between the titular queen and Prince Albert (played here by Rupert Friend) as its focus. Director Jean-Marc Vallée would go on to helm 'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Big Little Lies', so you know this isn't any old costume drama.
Dumplin'
This Netflix original stars Jennifer Aniston and is super sweet. The plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen signs up for her mom's Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant. Initially, it's in protest. Then she starts to take it seriously. Another one that should make you appreciate mum more.
Wonder Woman
Even just to say 'You're my Wonder Woman' to your mum should be excuse enough to check this out. Plus it'll help you get your mum into superhero movies. Gal Gadot plays the titular character aka Princess Diana, who lives a sheltered life with the Amazonians. That is until war breaks out and she becomes determined to help mankind.
And if you absolutely must…
Bad Moms
Look we're not big fans of 'Bad Moms', but mammies seem to love it so we guess you should watch it for her sake. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn star as three mums who, sick of being underappreciated, decide they're going to get drunk, party and no longer care about being labelled as 'bad moms'. It's heavily slapstick and very hit-and-miss but when it hits, it hits.
