The sci-fi series looks like it could be the next big thing on our screens.
Based on the book series by Isaac Asimov, 'Foundation' follows a "band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it" and the storyline sprawls a massive timeline of over 1,000 years.
Brought to life by David Goyer, whose writing credits include 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Dark Knight Rises', the showrunner says in the teaser that the book series has tried to be made for the past 50 years. The first book published by Asimov was released in 1942, and spawned many prequels, sequels, and spin-offs, the last of which was released in 1993, one year after the famed American author passed away.
Our first look at the 'Foundation' TV series was unveiled by Apple's Tim Cook at their recent Worldwide Developers Conference. The first-ever on-screen adaptation stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton.
Filmed in Limerick's Troy Studios, the 'Foundation' production was halted earlier this year due to health risks, and is believed to be one of Ireland's largest-ever productions. It's difficult to tell whether production will pick up once again now that TV and film companies are beginning to head back into production.
The award-winning novels have been a major influence in popular culture, so much so that they helped craft one of the biggest franchises we know and love today. The series created The Galactic Empire, which can be seen as huge guidance for George Lucas and his intergalactic 'Star Wars' films. Even Elon Musk, the man being Tesla and SpaceX, cites the 'Foundation' series as inspiration on his entrepreneurial career.
Excitement is high for 'Foundation', which will arrive in 2021 on Apple TV+ in a 10-part series.
