Garfield is coming off the back of a massive year. Now, the 'Tick, tick... BOOM!' actor finds himself starring in a crime mini-series based in the Mormon state of Utah.

The former web-slinger plays Detective Pyre, a Utah cop and Church of Latter-day Saints elder who is committed to his faith and his family. While investigating a double murder, he starts to question some of the church's teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer.

In the trailer, Pyre is heard talking about "things and beliefs that I’ve only ever heard whisperings about."

The series is based on the 2003 true-crime book of the same name, written by Jon Krakouer. The book follows two stories, with one being the origin and evolution of the Mormon church. The other is a double homicide which came as a result of religious fundamentalism.

'Normal People' star Daisy-Edgar Jones will star alongside Garfield in the series as a faithful Mormon called Brenda. The series also features Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat and Christopher Heyerdahl.

David Mackenzie, Isabel Sandoval, and Thomas Schlamme will direct the series. Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black is the series creator and serves as an executive producer. Alongside him are Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Anna Culp, Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Gillian Berrie.
