According to sources, Marvel is in discussions about returning to the character of Punisher - with Jon Bernthal expected to reprise his role.
Netflix's Marvel series were a huge success (well, apart from 'Iron Fist' season one and the tragic 'Defenders' - but still, we watched them). And so it's no surprise that Marvel is planning a return to the properties once again, now that they're back under their control.
All of the MCU properties were cancelled from Netflix without warning, which, at the time, was most likely down to Disney prepping their umbrella of properties under their new streaming service Disney+. 'Daredevil', 'Jessica Jones', 'Luke Cage', 'Iron Fist', and 'The Punisher' never got their planned third or fourth seasons.
The character of Frank Castle first appeared during 'Daredevil' season two, who must enlist the attorney help of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock. The character eventually ends up in jail and bumps into the nefarious Wilson Fisk. Following his introduction, 'The Punisher' ran for two seasons on Netflix, starring Jon Bernthal.
However, according to the publication Giant Freakin Robot, it's this grittier series that may be the first up for a revisit. Marvel is apparently keen to revive the character in the future, with Bernthal expected to reprise his role. Given that the series would be more adult-orientated than their current offerings on Disney+, it will be interesting to see whereabouts this project should land.
Either way, this news should be quite exciting for fans of the original series, and those who are keen for Marvel to expand their current slate of MCU TV series offerings. 'WandaVision' is the first series to arrive on Disney+.
But we have to wonder if 'The Punisher' reboot can happen - why not 'Daredevil'? The series was the most popular of the Marvel TV series on Netflix, and fans (and crew) were pretty devastated when the cancellation was announced (but Cox will reprise his Daredevil role in the 'Spider-Man' multiverse sequel this December). 'Jessica Jones' and 'Luke Cage' were mostly great too - but 'Iron Fist' can probably stay buried in Netflix's back catalogue for good.
Expect to hear more news on the potential 'The Punisher' reboot in the future.
