Marvel fans everywhere were holding out to see whether 'Black Widow' would be purely a cinematic release or go to the streaming service Disney+. In this climate of uncertainty, where numerous cinemas around the globe remain closed, the final decision marks a compromise.
'Black Widow' is officially debuting on Disney+ on the same date that it hits theatres (where they are open).
It's not the only title getting such a release.
The upcoming live-action movie 'Cruella', starring Emma Stone, will also hit cinemas and the streamer on the same date.
Disney has announced a massive shake-up in their schedule.
'Cruella' arrives first, with a release date of May 28th.
'Black Widow' meanwhile has been delayed to July 9th, having previously been pencilled in for a May release.
Presumably, the studio hopes more cinemas will be open then, so as many viewers as possible can enjoy the superhero epic on the big screen.
Both 'Black Widow' and 'Cruella' will be available on Disney+ at the premiere access cost of $30 (the equivalent of about €22 here).
Since Scarlett Johansson's solo outing has taken the July slot, Marvel movie 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' has moved to September 3rd. It is expected to get a traditional theatre release.
Disney+ subscribers can also look forward to the latest from Pixar, 'Luca'.
The animation focussed on two mermaid boys (merboys..?) will drop exclusively on Disney+ this summer, on June 18th.
As with its predecessor 'Soul', it will be available at no additional cost.
Disney have also announced new release dates for the following smaller titles, most of which hail from 20th Century.
Ryan Reynolds movie 'Free Guy' now hits cinemas August 13th.
'Kingsman' prequel 'The King's Man' arrives on December 22nd.
The 'Murder on the Orient Express' follow-up 'Death on the Nile' has a new release date of February 11th, 2022.
And 'Deep Water' arrives shortly before that on January 14th, 2022.
