The Point Theatre is to be renamed 'The O2'.

Dublin's largest indoor venue will re-open this December under its new name, and with an extended capacity of 13,000 (its original capacity was 8,500).

The naming deal was struck with huge music promoters Live Nation, who own half of the venue.

According to the press release, Irish music fans will enjoy 'some 150 entertainment and live events in any given year', and that O2 customers will benefit from being able to purchase tickets for said events 'up to 48 hours before they go on general release'.

All sorts of rumours abound, regarding what big name will re-open the Docklands venue, including one optimistic punter declaring Britney Spears, U2 or... chuckle.. Prince as the favourites to cut the metaphorical ribbon.
