Stone Temple Pilots have fired their lead singer and founding member Scott Weiland, according to a statement released by the band today.

The very oddly-worded statement was brief, stating: "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland." No other reason for the parting was given.

Scott Weiland reacted to the news via a statement issued to Rolling Stone.

"I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning from reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday."

Weiland has been a member of Stone Temple Pilots since the middle of the 1980s. The band split in 2002, after which he formed Velvet Revolver. Stone Temple Pilots reformed in 2008 and toured as recently as last year.
