The world premiere of the opera penned by Rufus Wainwright, 'Prima Donna', will be held in Manchester next summer.

The opera, which is about 'a day in the life of an opera singer who falls in love with a journalist', according to Wainwright, will play at the city's Palace Theatre next July 10th, 12th, 14th, 17th and 19th.

The opera was originally commissioned by Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb, but a dispute with Wainwright means that plans to hold the debut performance of the opera in New York have been scuppered. It's believed that the Montréal-raised Wainwright insisted on writing the libretto in French, instead of Italian.
