Washington DC trio RDGLDGRN (pronounced Red Gold Green) have turned a lot of heads since releasing their Red Gold Green EP earlier this year. Charmingly, the band describe their sound as "one giant rainbow", only fitting when you consider that the band say the live their lives "as colours". Recently the band have been recorded with music demigods Dave Grohl and Pharrell Williams at famed recording studios Sound City and their upcoming debut album is sure to continue their ascent.
The band made the trip to Dublin last week to open the UK and Ireland leg of their tour and we caught up with them for a quick chat ahead of their show at The Academy.
I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but what was it like working with Dave Grohl?
Working with Dave Grohl was amazing! Not only is he an unbelievable drummer but he's also the nicest most humble and down to earth guy we've met.
Having recently seen the Sound City documentary, you really get a sense of the magnitude of the history of the place. Was that evident while recording there too?
That building is the stuff of legend! That drum is enough to make you stop and stare.
How would you describe your sound? You seem to draw from a patchwork of different creative influences.
The sound we have comes from a number of places. We've mixed indie rock with hip hop and DC's very own go-go music. The result is energetic, rhythmic and bass heavy music.
I have to ask about the name, where did you get that from?
The name is derived from our individual names, RED GOLD GREEN. We as people live our lives in colour, our families call us by these names and have been for years so it only seemed like the obvious choice. We took out the vowels because we didn’t like how it looked all spelled out. We've grown fond of the resulting jibberish!
Looking forward to opening your UK and Ireland tour here in Dublin?
Of course we are! It'll the most beautiful, earthy place on the tour, we love the outdoors and the natural smell etc. We really can’t wait to see the some of the country, do a show and see all the people who want to come see us play our music.
Your song 'I Love Lamp', presumably that’s an Anchorman quote yes? There must be a story behind how you chose that as a song title…
The song title is indeed an Anchorman reference. When Brick Tamland says he loves lamp he clearly is incapable of loving anything. In the same way, the song talks about the simple idea of having a girl and not being able to love her but still hoping to "hit it if she wont be my friend".
What have you planned for the rest of the year once you complete this jaunt over to the UK and Ireland?
After the UK and Ireland, we'll finish up in a few more countries in Europe and then we jump on the Vans Warped Tour in the states for the rest of the summer! We have a great summer ahead!
