The Comedy Cellar in New York has a reputation for unexpectedly mixing big names in with up-and-coming comedians on their line-ups - but few patrons would have expected to see a pop icon take to the stage the other night.

As she revealed on Instagram, Madonna found herself on stage at the club alongside Amy Schumer on Tuesday night, when she got sidetracked from the launch of her new skincare line at nearby department store Barney's.

"The next minute i was tagging along with @amyschumer at @NYCComedyCellar Making my stand up debut!," she wrote. "What a thrill. Finally busted my cherry. thank you Amy!”

In fact, it was a big night for those who bought tickets for Tuesday's show, as none other than Louis CK, Aziz Ansari, Jon Stewart and Pete Holmes were also on the bill.

See pictures - although unfortunately no footage - of Madge's performance below:

We'd like to thank @nyccomedycellar for taking a chance on our new act
