The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame school of 2014 has been announced with several new inductees, including Nirvana who have been nominated to the prestigious list in their first year of eligibility.

In order to be considered for induction bands must wait for 25 years since the release of their first record. Nirvana's first record was 1989's Bleach and - hey presto - here we are.

Along with Nirvana, the rest of the newly-added inductees are Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates and Linda Ronstadt. The E Street Band will also receive an award for musical excellence at the ceremony at Barclay's Centre in Brooklyn on April 10th.

There could be a few awkward interactions between Kiss and the surviving members of Nirvana at the induction, by the way, after remarks made by Kiss frontman Gene Simmons about this year's nominees and how some can't be seen as music icons.

"Kurt Cobain - no, that's one or two records, that's not enough. Amy Winehouse - that's one or two records, that's not enough. What, just because you died that makes you an icon? No, no", he was quoted as saying.

Bands who were eligible but failed to make the cut for the 2014 event are The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, LL Cool J, The Meters, NWA, The Replacements, Link Wray, Yes and The Zombies.
