Nikka Costa has been waiting all her life to be a star. The daughter of American big band producer Don, she began singing at the age of five and went on to support The Police, duet with her godfather Frank Sinatra and carve out a career as a rock singer in Australia. Now 28, she releases her European debut, an eclectic affair which combines moody soul music with a succession of soft rock ballads. It's all very easy on the ear, but not necessarily the best way to show off Costa's wailing vocals, which are often cruelly exposed by an overwrought production. Sadly, stardom may have to wait a while longer.
