There was a lot of talk yesterday about the Grammys - not only because of the various upsets and the numerous politically-themed performances - but because many people had an issue with the fact that only two awards of the whole ceremony went to women.
Alessia Cara won Best New Artist - which caused controversy for its own reasons - and Little Big Town, who have two women in their band, won Best Country Group. It also emerged that Lorde was the only 'Album of the Year' nominee not to be offered a slot to perform solo.
The Recording Academy President Neil Portnow made matters worse by responding to the negative press bvy suggesting that women "to step up because I think they would be welcome."
Now, Pink has responded to Portnow's comments with an angry handwritten letter on Twitter, which read:
"Women in music don’t need to “Step up” – women have been stepping since the beginning of time. Stepping up and also stepping aside.
Women OWNED music last year. They’ve been KILLING IT. And every year before this. ‘When we celebrate the honour the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women STEP UP every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal, and what it looks like to be fair.’

Plenty of other people had things to say about Portnow's comments, too...

the head of the grammys telling women to "step up" when they put kesha on stage to perform her pain in front of the room that won't release her from her contract is as rich and sour as week-old moldy clotted cream

So, 3 appearances by un-nominated U2 but no time for current hit maker and sole female Album of the Year nominee, Lorde, then an admonition from NARAS President Neil Portnow for women to “step up.” Amaaaaayzing... #hypocrisy

I wish the #Grammys would return to female/male categories. Who will young girls be inspired by to pick up a guitar and rock when most every category is filled with men? I'm not sure it is about women needing to “step up”, (as said by the male in charge). #GrammysSoMale https://t.co/v1rvbT3pCC

Grammys President: 'Women need to step up more.'
Lorde: 'I'd love to perform my song, I really-'
Grammys President: 'Sit down, Lorde'#grammys #GrammysSoMale
