Many young pop stars use social media both as a marketing tool and also as a way of keeping in touch with fans.

However, Lorde has proved something of an outlier as the Kiwi musician has shied away from Twitter and Instagram in recent years, despite being quite active on it earlier on in her career.

Now, the 'Royals' singer has explained exactly why she's been so absent from social media - and to be perfectly honest, it's a very relatable reason: she finds it too stressful.

Lorde explained that she felt that she wad losing her sense of free will in a new interview with her friend Cazzie David.

"Part of what made me 'peace out' on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country," she said.

Her most recent missive to fans was earlier this year, when she excitedly revealed in a letter posted via Instagram that her third album was underway and was "so f**king good."

The album had been delayed because of the death of her beloved dog Pearl last year.
