A recording of John Lennon covering a Lloyd Price song in 1973 - apparently drunk and slurring his words - has fetched $30,000 at auction in Los Angeles.

The ex-Beatle recorded the song, which has never been heard in public before, in 1973, during the brief 'lost weekend' period when he was estranged from his wife Yoko Ono.

He recorded 'Just Because' by Louisiana-born rock 'n' roll musician Price, changing the lyrics to "Just a little cocaine will set me right / Wanna take all them new singers, Carol and the other one with the nipples / I wanna take 'em and hold 'em tight".

An anonymous bidder bought the tape from the anonymous seller, who was given the recording thirty years ago.
