American singer and songwriter JJ Cale has died of a heart attack in California at the age of 74.

Cale suffered a heart attack on Friday and died at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.

A statement on the musician's official website said: "We've lost a great artist and a great person. JJ Cale passed away at 8:00 pm on Friday July 26 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, CA. He had suffered a heart attack."

"There are no immediate plans for services."

"Donations are not needed but he was a great lover of animals so, if you like, you can remember him with donations to your favorite local animal shelter."

Cale won a Grammy in 2006 for his The Road To Escondido album, recorded with frequent collaborator Eric Clapton. Cale released his first album Naturall in 1971, before achieving critical acclaim for albums like 1976's Troubadour.

The Oklahoman will also be remembered for writing songs which would go on to be hits for the likes of Clapton ('After Midnight' and 'Cocaine') and Lynyrd Skynyrd ('Kansas' and 'Call Me The Breeze').
