A handwritten letter by Paul McCartney inviting an unnamed drummer to play with the Beatles has gone under the hammer at Christie's auction house in London - fetching a cool £35,000.

The note, which was written in 1960, was found by a coin collector inside the pages of a book which he picked up at a car boot sale in Liverpool was expected to sell for around £9,000 but ended up pulling in almost four times that.

The letter was written by McCartney in response to an advertisement in the Liverpool Echo in which a drummer was announcing his availability. Pete Best was, at the time, the Beatles drummer so you have to wonder if he was kept in the dark with regards to McCartney's drummer search.
