Grimes has never shied away from talking about her mental health issues in the past.
Previously, the Canadian art-pop musician had spoken of her decision to undergo experimental eye surgery to cure her seasonal depression, and had been open about her battle with anxiety in an interview last year.
Now, she has revealed that she was hospitalised on Monday, following her appearance on SNL - which her partner Elon Musk hosted.
Grimes appeared as 'Super Mario' character Princess Peach to Musk's Wario during one SNL sketch and posted images of herself in costume backstage with Miley Cyrus on Instagram. She captioned the image: "Forgot to post these cuz I somehow caused myself to have a panic attack and went to the hospital yesterday which tbh was quite scary and I suppose it’s a good time to start therapy.
"But nonetheless – wowwwww @mileycyrus is good live and so chill! So grateful to the SNL team for being so kind and letting me sneak in as princess peach [and] so proud of my beautiful E (which I know will upset the grimes fans so I apologize in advance) but he killed it.”
Musk's hosting skills met with mixed reviews, meanwhile, with the New York Times declaring it a "huge win" for the entrepreneur - although the social media reaction was somewhat more disparaging.
