According to a survey carried out by OnePoll, Gary Barlow is officially Britain's Greatest Songwriter. 3000 people voted in the poll to put the Take That man ahead of giants including Lennon and McCartney, George Michael, The Bee Gees and Sting.

Though the win may seem a little ridiculous when competing against such classic artists, Barlow's skill has already been recognised with five Ivor Novello awards for songwriting and composing.

A OnePoll spokesperson said: "Gary has been responsible for some of the biggest hits of the past decade." As well as the hits he has written for Take That, Barlow has also composed songs for Charlotte Church, Blue and Atomic Kitten.

The OnePoll top ten is as follows:

1 Gary Barlow
2  John Lennon
3  Paul McCartney
4  Chris Martin
5  George Michael
6  Bee Gees
7  Noel Gallagher
8  Robbie Williams
9  Sting
10 Kate Bush
