If you were holding out hope that Britney Spears was plotting her musical comeback now that she's exorcised a few demons with her memoir - it looks like you may be disappointed.

The pop superstar has issued a definitive denial of reports that she is working on a new album with a scathing Instagram post that declared how she will "never return to the music industry".

US gossip site Page Six had suggested that Spears had been in contact with pop songwriters Julia Michaels and Charli XCX in relation to writing songs for her comeback record, but she took to Instagram to deny the rumours, calling them "trash".

"They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry !!!," she wrote. "When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people !!!"

She added how she had written "over 20 songs for other people the past two years" and was a "ghostwriter and honestly enjoy it that way."

She also denied claims that her bestselling memoir 'The Woman in Me' was released without her approval, saying "have you read the news these days ??? I’m so LOVED and blessed !!!"

Spears' last album was 2016's 'Glory', which was her ninth record and spawned the single 'Slumber Party'.
