Alt J have added an Ivor Novello award to their trophy cabinet for their debut album Awesome Wave.

The awards which are taking place today in London, saw the British indie band fight off competition from Ben Howard and Lianne La Havas. The band didn't think they would win the award so no doubt they are feeling pretty chuffed now. Band member Gus Unger-Hamilton said 'We'll give it a good go, but it's no shame if we lose.'

The awards ceremony celebrates songwriting ability and are entirely voted on by songwriters and composers. The band also beat off stiff competition from the likes of Django Django, Richard Hawley, Plan B and Lianne La Havas earlier this year when they won the 2012 Mercury Music Prize for their album.
