Alt-J have beaten stiff competition from the likes of Django Django, Richard Hawley, Plan B and Lianne La Havas to win the 2012 Mercury Music Prize for their album An Awesome Wave.

The announcement was just made just after 10pm on Thursday night by Lauren Laverne at the ceremony in the Roundhouse, Camden Town.

Speaking of the win Gwil Sainsbury, guitarist/bassist for the Leeds-based band, said: "If we get into the whole issue of names we could get quite stuck because I think we’ve all got a fair buzz on, so I think we might just thank everyone in team Alt-J who’s ever made a difference to us."

Alt-J join previous winners of the prestigious prize, such as PJ Harvey (the only artist to have won the prize twice) as well as The xx, Elbow and Arctic Monkeys.

The winner traditionally sees a massive spike in record sales in the weeks after the announcement, so next Monday's sales figures will make for some interesting reading.
