We've all been in the situation where you're stuck in a confined space - it's usually a bus or a train, in our experience - and some person starts doing something really irritating.

It could be humming, it might be singing to themselves, but most of the time, it's mindless whistling. If you haven't had this happen to you, count yourself lucky - and let the below story also be a cautionary tale if you're an offender.

A woman in Forest Grove, Oregon called the police recently after a man near her house wouldn't stop whistling 'Closing Time' by Semisonic. The police department log reports the complaint as being a report of 'obnoxious' whistling, and when the woman confronted the man and told him to "shut up", an altercation broke out.

Captain Mike Herb of Forest Grove PD told TIME: “It’s not clear if the caller would have been more or less upset if it was a different genre or whether it was just the talent lacking in the whistling."

By the time police got to the scene of the 'crime', the man had moved on - but when they eventually found him, he was still whistling the song and said that he was upset at being told to stop. No doubt he had a Secret Smile on his face as he departed (badum tsssssh!)

Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson reacted amusingly when he heard about the story:
