John Gibbons has long been recognised for his standout approach to electronic dance music production, garnering millions of streams and selling out tours across Ireland, Europe and Australia.

His chart-topping hits include ‘Would I Lie to You’ and ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’, with his most recent chart smash ‘Edge of Seventeen’, featuring rising Irish star Lyra. His new single ‘All I Need’ sees Gibbons join forces with the Treetalk, an emerging Chicago artist who has been making waves in the dance music scene with his distinctive vocal ability.

To celebrate his new single, we caught up with John to learn more about him.

1. What’s the music that you listened to growing up, that you still listen to today?
I was a big Oasis fan growing up and still listen to the band on a daily basis! I also still regularly listen to a lot of hip-hop from before rappers forgot how to rap. I’m a big fan of 2Pac, Biggie, Dr. Dre and Cypress Hill. The music my parents listened to was also a big influence on me and I still listen to bands like Queen, Dire Straits and The Police. Quite a varied mix!

2. In three words, describe the minute before you walk on stage.
Ball. Of. Energy!

3. How do you wind down after a gig?
Generally in the most rock n’ roll way possible - a cup of tea and a bath! It can take some time as I’m generally on quite a high after the show and rarely ready for bed but after-parties are definitely not my thing!

4. What’s the one song (by another artist) you wish you’d written or recorded first?
Three Drives - ‘Greece 2000’. My favourite dance song of all time.

5. What is your pet peeve?
Blind, unquestioning acceptance of and compliance with authority.

6. Name one record, one book and one film that everyone should hear / read / see.
Richard Ashcroft - ‘Alone With Everybody’
Paulo Coelho - ‘The Alchemist’
‘The Truman Show’

7. Pick the director and lead actor(s) for a biopic about your life.
Danny Boyle would have to direct and Julian Rhind-Tutt allegedly looks a bit like me, so he’ll do as the lead actor!

8. You’re ordering take-away, what do you get?
Massaman curry from any decent Thai restaurant. Thai food is by far my favourite.

9. Describe your perfect day off.
Day off? Never heard of it! If I ever get one though it will definitely be spent on Curracloe Beach in Co. Wexford. Irrespective of the weather, it’s my favourite place in the world!

10. Recommend a podcast and tell us why we should subscribe to it.
Mark Passio’s ‘What On Earth Is Happening’. It’s a 150-part deep-dive into natural law, the world around us and provides a simple blueprint for how to practice living a better and more productive life, while potentially changing the world. It’s paradigm shattering and potentially life changing but make sure you listen strictly in chronological order for it to make any sense. While it can be a bit difficult to get into initially, it’s incredibly rewarding.
