Basciville are brothers Cillian and Lorcan Byrne, an indie/folk duo from Wexford who have been making music together and have been praised for their soulful songs, emotive lyrics and dark orchestral harmonies.

They'll release their debut album 'Hymns to the Air' in early 2021, but have just put out their new single 'Calvary' – a track about 'nostalgic lust' with a cinematic video filmed during lockdown in their native Co. Wexford.

We caught up with Basciville to learn more about them.

1. What’s the music that you listened to growing up, that you still listen to today?
All of the Seattle bands from the '90s, and James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.

2. In three words, describe the minute before you walk on stage.
Where’s my capo?

3. How do you wind down after a gig?
We’d usually have a beer and chat to whoever is around.

4. What’s the one song you wish you’d written or recorded first?
Fairytale in New York - because when the cockroaches inherit the earth, that song will still be playing on the radio come Christmas.

5. You can only have three albums on your phone/in your house at any one time - what three would you pick for today?
Blue by Joni Mitchell, Shadow Theatre by Tigran Hamasyan and Ah Um by Charles Mingus.

6. Name one record, one book and one film that everyone should hear / read / see.
Ah Um by Charles Mingus, The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy and Blade Runner.

7. Pick the director and lead actor(s) for a biopic about your life.
Nicolas Cage directed by Michael Bay.

8. You’re ordering take-away, what do you get?
A Thai dish probably, something with pad in the name.

9. Describe your perfect day off.
It would probably involve as little movement, pants and thinking as possible.*See Ferris Bueller.

10. Tell us, in one sentence, why we should come to your next gig (whenever it may be.)
Probably because we’ll be starved musicians (narcissists) desperate for your love and attention. Usually makes for a good show.

BONUS QUESTION: Recommend a podcast and tell us why we should subscribe to it.
Duncan Trussell Family Hour - It’s a weekly show where the comedian Duncan Trussell and guests talk about everything from environmental science to how to write the perfect comedy sketch. It’s entertaining and informative! (Cillian)

Norm Macdonald Live - It’s a weekly current event show presented by the funniest man alive, Norm Macdonald (the clue is in the name!) (Lorcan)
