Few filmmakers would dare to make a comedy about the Holocaust, yet, Italian comic Roberto Benigni has done the unthinkable. Benigni plays the carefree and Chaplin-esque Guido, an Italian Jew who begins a family while ignoring the country's growing anti-Semitism. As World War II ensues, Guido and his son are split from his wife and sent to a concentration camp. Yet Guido, determined to shield his child from the harsh reality of the camp, makes believe they're playing a game. His attempts at hiding the truth are moments of unprecedented comic brilliance that leave you laughing and crying at the same time.
