In what is a crazy stat, Wonder Woman will become the first female-directed film with a budget of over $100 million.
Gal Gadot stars as the iconic superhero in a production that's a huge part of Warner Bros. and DC's plans for their comic book universe. The flick is directed by Patty Jenkins - who helmed the Charlize Theron Oscar winner, Monster. So, with the quality of the director and the popularity of the character, there's high hopes for this one.
Kathryn Bigelow has directed one film that has touched touched the $100 million mark, K-19: The Widowmaker, while Lana Wachowski had transitioned to a woman having co-directed Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending. This will be the first occasion where a female has solely directed a blockbuster over that figure. Wonder Woman has not had its budget released, but you'd be talking somewhere between $125 and $150 million - before marketing costs etc.
The very sound Catherine Hardwicke (who directed Twilight and dropped into the office to appear on one of our podcasts) is also in that blockbuster territory, as is Mimi Leder - who directed Deep Impact, with a budget of $80 million way back when. You would assume it's a matter of time before they tackle a movie on a similar scale to WW.
It's ridiculous it's taken this long, and given the strong slate of female directors currently working in Hollywood it should absolutely be the first of many.
