Wonder Woman is slaying the competition at the US box office on it's opening weekend.

The DC superhero movie is powering to an estimated $100.5m opening weekend in the States. Compared to other superhero films, that's a better opening than Iron Man ($98.6 million) Doctor Strange ($85 million) and Thor ($65.7 million).

The film is also the highest ever opening weekend for a film directed by a female director. Patty Jenkins has taken the crown from Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously held the record thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey's $85.1 million.

However it would be the lowest opening for a DCEU movie to date. Man of Steel ($116.6 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million) and Suicide Squad ($134 million) all performed better in their domestic opening weekends.

One thing Wonder Woman has in it's favour though is overwhelming critical support (93% on Rotten Tomatoes). Something none of the previous DCEU entries have had. This could be crucial to the film's overall performance at the box office. Batman v Superman for example saw an almost 70% drop for it's second weekend which could possibly be put down to the film's critical reception and poor word of mouth.

Whether the positive reviews for Wonder Woman will have any effect in mitigating it's inevitable drop off next week remains to be seen.

UPDATE

A strong international performance has seen Wonder Woman take home an estimated $223 million worldwide. The film took in $122.5m overseas on top of it's already impressive domestic opening of $100.5m.

The film's worldwide opening is better than the first two Iron Man movies, the first two Thor movies, both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Man of Steel.
