It's a well known fact that the worlds of whatever superheroes you may have an allegiance to are pretty male-dominated. That's not to say it's the movie industry's fault, but more so that the folk who sit down to pen the comic books in the first place, on which these movies are based, tend to scratch their heads wondering, 'what adjective can I tag on to the word 'man'?'; Superman, Iron Man, Batman, Spiderman, yeah, this isn't news to anyone.
This doesn't mean there aren't any female superheroes already in existence (not in real life, obvz, unless you count Michelle Obama or something as a real-life Superwoman), or being dreamt up at this very moment. And if Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of The Black Widow in The Avengers was anything to go by, it'd be nice to see a few more gals share the spotlight with the Robert Downey Jrs and the Henry Cavills of this world. So perhaps the movie makers and shakers just need to search a little harder for the good'uns.
One man who has the power to balance the scales more in the favour of women, and absolutely wants to do so, is Joss Whedon, director of the forthcoming Avengers sequels.
The well-regarded creative has said he will endeavour to feature more women when it comes to his work in the world of Marvel. He's even got "some people in mind" for the much anticipated flicks. What's more, he's been quoted before for saying it really irks him that it's become one big sausage fest; don't forget, he was the man behind the ass-kicking, vampire-slaying Buffy.
In an interview with Collider, Whedon revealed: "I do try to make sure that the women in the movies aren't window dressing, that they have something to say and something to do. And I've got some people in mind. Marvel's got some great characters, so why not draw on them."
