We recently reported on how terrible the comedies produced in 2016 were and I think we can all readily admit, truly good, funny comedies have been few and far between for quite some time now.

A new action cop comedy caper called CHiPs is now hoping to break the cycle. Based on the popular NBC series that premiered in 1977 (because most movies are adaptations now), CHiPs stars Dax Shepard and Michael Peña in the roles of Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncharello.

Shepard wrote and directed the upcoming film, which finds finds both men working as fresh recruits to the California Highway Patrol. The trailer debuted on Jimmy Kimmel.

From what we can see, it’s a whole lot of silly and is probably going for the Paul Blart: Mall Cop vein of comedy rather than say the darker humour of say the recent War on Everyone (which also saw Peña play a cop, as have many movies). We also don’t think we’ve ever seen so many d*** jokes in one trailer.

Still, in its defence, one gets the sense that there’s a lot more jokes to this movie than we see in the trailer, so it could be surprise audiences.
