A Wall Street Journal film reviewer has come under fire after he mistakes Dev Patel for Kal Penn in his review of the former's new movie, Lion.

In his review for the potential awards contender, Joe Morgenstern referenced a past performance by Penn in Mira Nair's The Namesake when describing Patel's work in Lion. The film tells the true story of Saroo Brierley and his quest to find the family from whom he was separated 25 years earlier.

"Saroo is played dazzlingly by Dev Patel, who gives his richest performance since The Namesake," he wrote in the review which was spotted and quickly shared around Twitter.

The tweet that pointed out the mistake was shared by Penn, who currently stars in ABC's Designated Survivor. New Jersey born Penn and Britain's Patel are both of Indian descent.

The Journal has since issued a correction and Morgenstern, a Pulitzer Prize winner, initially dismissed it as a "dumb error" on Twitter before issuing a heartfelt apology.
