So by now you'll all have realised that whether we like it or not, we're headed full throttle towards a digital only world. Soon enough, we'll no longer want for DVDs, what with all our high flying and our need for social sharing. Like vinyl records and VHS tapes, we'll eventually look at DVDs as a retro thing of the past. What does this mean? It means we'll have access to more stuff, in more places, that we can share with more people. It's a good thing.

God knows we at entertainment.ie enjoy the movies, and what could be more enjoyable than having access to (and ownership of) your favourite movies on multiple platforms no matter where in the world you may find yourself? 'Tis the future, folks.

As home entertainment transitions to digital distribution, Warner Bros. (along with a number of other major Hollywood studios who'll soon be jumping on the band wagon) believes in the importance of enhancing the value of digital ownership, and so, they've teamed up with one of the first major innovators in digital entertainment, UltraViolet, to create a more compelling and easy way for people like you and I to purchase, manage and share our digital movie libraries. So in short, no more clogging up your shelve space with unsightly plastic folders.

Now for ta bit of techy talk: UltraViolet will allow customers to access their digital library from the cloud, by instantly streaming or downloading their movies on a wide variety of devices, including PC, Mac, Android and iOS. Its purpose is to enhance customer experience of digital movie ownership through added flexibility (multiple platforms), portability (watch on-the-go)m share-ability (add up to five family members to a UV account) and safety/security.

Warner Bros are the first in Ireland to get in on the action. Coinciding with the DVD launch of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (which you can buy in stores as of now), each person who buys a hardcopy DVD will get a free digital copy inside the box which they can set up, pain-free, on their UV account.

Too many technical buzzwords here will serve to do nothing other than give you a headache, 'cause truth be told, it's really rather simple. Our advice? Head to www.uiltraviolet.flixster.com with your DVD in hand, set yourself up with an account and follow the very simple instructions. Before you know it you'll be watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from your laptop, your phone, up in the sky and chatting with your cousin on the other side of the world about their experience of the digital movie you've just shared with them. Simples!
