The red band trailer for mystery thriller ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ has arrived. The film boasts a massive cast which includes Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo (‘Widows’), Dakota Johnson, Cailee Spaeny (‘Pacific Rim Uprising’), Lewis Pullman (‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’), and Jon Hamm.
The movie is directed, written and produced by Drew Goddard who made his directorial debut with ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, a horror with a set-up not too dissimilar from this film’s. Goddard’s writing credits include ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Alias’, ‘Lost’, ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘The Martian’, the latter for which he received an Oscar nomination.
The plot synopsis for ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ reads:
“Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell.
“A young concierge (Lewis Pullman) greets the strangers: a down-on-his-luck priest (Jeff Bridges), a singer (Cynthia Erivo), an impressionable Southern girl (Cailee Spaeny) and her older sister (Dakota Johnson), a vacuum cleaner salesman (Jon Hamm), and a charismatic cult leader (Chris Hemsworth).”
We’re getting a kind of Coen brothers vibe from the trailer. Highlights look like they’re going to include newcomer Cynthia Ervivo, who can be heard singing in the trailer. She has had a stellar career on Broadway in recent years, starring in such shows as ‘Sister Act’ and ‘The Colour Purple’, the latter for which she won a Tony and Grammy award.
Another highlight looks like it’s going to be Chris Hemsworth playing a deranged (and, of course, topless) man.
‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ is released in Irish cinemas on October 10th.
