Well, we had to expect this, right?
It seems the next decade to be plundered for its filmography is the '90s as Baywatch is headed for a big-screen adaptation and its screenwriters are now taking on Paul Verhoeven's subversive sci-fi epic Starship Troopers. Although the film was based on Robert Heinlein's pulpy novel, Verhoeven took the broad strokes - space military, giant bugs - and turned into a fascinating and really, really underhanded way of approaching fascism and nationalism.
Really, go back and look at Starship Troopers and you'll see that the military uniforms are copped from the Nazis, the propaganda films were lifted out of Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will and even Michael Ironside's teacher-character was basically taking leafs out of Mein Kampf.
It's incredible stuff, so we can fully expect the reboot to have NONE of those aspects in it whatsoever. Instead, expect a watery sluice of CGI and B-list actors with a first-timer director who'll probably have some interesting ideas, but will get shot down by studio executives on a regular basis.
It'll be the Robocop reboot, basically. Fun times ahead, gang. No release date has been set, but THR reports that the film will focus more on the source novel than Verhoeven's film as a reference for it.
So, yeah, fun times ahead. Great news.
